
Somali Mentoring Programs
for African Immigrant Children
Children aged 6 – 17 are offered with the support of a Somali caseworker. Programs include a homework club, soccer and basketball programs for boys and a swimming program for girls. Many participants have little access to resources and programs, and few opportunities to develop a sense of community and belonging. Mentors are matched with children one on one or in a group, to provide homework assistance, sports and life skill development, enhance self esteem and friendship. Programs are offered at the Africa Centre.
Somali Homework Club:
Is a program for the Somalian community for children and youth in grades one to twelve. The program is offered at the Africa Centre from Monday to Thursday nights. The program allows the mentor to work one-on-one with a child or child, or a group of children assisting them with their school work, or with basic math, reading, writing and sciences. Mentor’s can volunteer for an hour or two a week with this program.
Somali Soccer Club:
Soccer Club is a mentoring program that sees the game of soccer teaching the children who would otherwise not be able to play the game, the mentor will help the children develop soccer skills as well as life skills such as self-esteem. The program is for the Somalian community for boys ages six to fifteen years of age and the program runs weekly for three hours and the boys are divided into three groups age 6-7 years, 8-11 year and 12 -15 years of age.
Somali Basketball Club:
Basketball Club is a mentoring program that sees the game of basketball teaching the youth who would otherwise not able to play the game, the mentor will help the youth develop basketball skills as well as life skills such as self-esteem. The program is for the Somalian community for youth ages fourteen to seventeen years of age and the program runs weekly for two hours.
Somali Girls Swim Program;
This program allows mentor’s to work one-on-one or in a group with girls ages six to eighteen years of age from the Somalian community. The volunteer will teach the girls the basic skills of swimming from feeling comfortable in the water, to blowing bubbles, front floats, etc. The program runs weekly for two hours.
