Go For It!

Liz & Amanda

GO FOR IT!

When Big Sister Liz was asked what advice she would give people who are looking to become a Big Brother/Big Sister she responded; “GO FOR IT! It’s the most fun you’ll ever have! It is so rewarding and you’ll have a great time”.

After three exciting years of being matched Liz and her Little Sister Amanda are closer than ever. Liz feels that being a Big Sister has given her the opportunity to be a kid again and have a million laughs! She values the ability to see the difference she is making in Amandas’ life. Amanda quoted, “I get to go out and do more things. Liz makes me feel independent when I’m with her”.

Liz has always been involved in volunteering. Before Big Brothers Big Sisters she was a Spark & youth leader. She decided that she wanted to continue her involvement with kids and felt that Big Brothers Big Sisters was the perfect fit for her. She quoted, “don’t be afraid to go outside your comfort zone”. Since having Liz in her life, Amanda has taken on the values that volunteering is a great way to give back to the community and make an impact on lives.

The Big Brothers Big Sisters 8th Annual Golf Tournament and going to see Carrie Underwood/Kalan Porter are the two most memorable events these ladies have experienced together. Not only did Amanda get the chance to hear her favorite artist perform live on stage but she got Kalan’s autograph after the concert.

As for future plans, Liz and Amanda can’t wait to learn more about each other since ironically from the age gap, they have a lot in common. They will be volunteering together at Raise a Reader, the Edmonton Police Half Marathon, the BBBS Golf Tournament and they are going to a rubberstamping workshop.

Liz and Amanda, your friendship has been inspiring to all of us here at Big Brothers Big Sisters. We look forward to hearing more of your amazing adventures in the future.

Strangers are Freinds Waiting to Happen

Meg & Mel

“Strangers are Friends Waiting to Happen”

For 5 years Mel and Meg have been matched as a Big Sister and Little Sister with each other. Mel’s initial impression of Meg was, “this tiny girl bursting with energy!” Now that 5 years have passed Meg is still bursting with energy, but much taller! Mel and Meg enjoy a variety of special memories including skating in the winter and celebrating Halloween together. Since Mel was a little girl herself, every year her mom throws a huge Halloween party for the family. There are crazy costumes, spooky decorations, pumpkin carving and delicious goodie bags for everyone. This is the fifth year running that Meg has attended the awesome Halloween party with Mel. Not only has it become a tradition that the girls look forward to sharing together each year but Meg has become part of Mel’s family.

Mel first got interested in Big brothers Big Sisters through her old job with United Way where she decided to begin volunteering, “I looked through the list and when I saw BBBS I knew that was exactly what I wanted to do. I’ve had such great mentors in my life; it was my turn to give back.” Since becoming a Big Sister Mel has learned many important life lessons from her Little Sister. “I’ve learned that children in our community need role models and that the more positive role models they have in their life, the more likely they will succeed. These kids are the future generation – we need to step up and let them know that people in their community care about them.”

Mel’s advice toward people who are looking to become a Big brother Big Sister is, “I would tell them that the time to become a Big Sister or Brother is right now. It doesn’t take up too much time and the feeling that you get after time spent with you little is magical. I would also assure them that they will probably get as much or more out the match than their little.”

One thing people often wonder is what kind of support Big Brothers Big Sisters offers once you’ve decided to become part of one of our programs. When asked Mel’s reply was, “The training was exceptional, Big brothers Big Sisters prepared us for everything and anything that might happen. The ongoing support from case workers is also great, I always feel supported.”

Congratulations Mel & Meg on a fantastic friendship! We hope you have a spooktacular time at your Halloween Party this year and that you send us more pictures so we can share them with everyone else!

Friends Are Like Angels Who Lift Us to Our Feet When Our Wings Have Forgotten How to Fly

Krysta & Jolene

“Friends are like angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have forgotten how to fly”

Being a Big Sister to Krysta has been a life changing experience for Jolene. Not only is she rewarded by the feeling of making someone else’s life happier but also by the impact Krysta has had on her life.

“Being a Big Sister has taught me a lot about being responsible and accountable. It has also taught me to slow down in life and realize that while work and career are important, so are the little things in life.”

Bike rides and scuba dives!

We got a sense of trouble in the making when we had the chance to sit down with Big Brother Todd and his little brother Julian.

The two have been matched only 9 months, but based on the stories they tell you would have thought they had been matched for years.  During the conversation that night there was never a dull moment, however, between the stories of tubing, punch buggies, random bike rides that turn into 45km and the time a jumbo pop exploded all over Julian in the theater, there was a sense of brotherhood that extended far beyond a mentoring program.  When asked where Todd gets the energy for all this excitement he expressed himself perfectly in saying “he (Julian) gives me the energy.” more...

Tulips come from Turkey

Asked why he became a Big Brother, Ron tells an interesting story. When he called our Big Brother Big Sister office and spoke to a caseworker, he related part of his story. How he became 99% visually impaired as a young, married father in 1990 and how his mobility is now affected. Our caseworker asked him “How can a blind person be an In-School Mentor?”

Friends Forever

We often hear from our mentors how much they get from the mentoring experience, and Maria is no exception. This cheerful, outgoing young woman bubbles with enthusiasm when she talks about River. The two love doing arts and crafts together, they enjoy reading and sometimes they go to the gym to play basketball and dodge-ball.
